Pets And Anxiety

Pets And Anxiety
My horse and me have a very special bond, so strong that she suffers from separation anxiety when i leave?

Does anyone else have this problem? She is very clingy just like a pet dog- she follows me round everywhere and hates it when i leave-she is 11 and i've had her for 6 years-she used to be a racehorse and loves to be in the stable with me.

Sounds like she uses you for her 'herd.' They are social animals that should be living with a 'herd.' Definitely getting her a companion will help her lonliness. She desperately wants some interaction with another creature...so she chooses you.

It's a great self esteem boost for some owners to be the horse's herd. And I know of one person who refuses to get a companion for their horse...just so their horse will remain attached to them. Guess that's all fine and dandy for feed time, or ride time...but what about the other 16- 20 hours in a day?? She's lonely.

Many horses do fine without a companion...but if yours is being stressed at being alone...I'd look for a goat or something for her.
