Pet Euthanasia question.?
Why during pet euthanasia do vets give the pet a first shot of a sedative before the actual euthanasia shot? Does the euthanasia shot cause pain to the animal? Can just the euthanasia shot be given to it without the sedative shot as well?
There are several ways that this can be done.
When I had my dog euthanized I had them put an IV in my dog and give her a shot of Valium prior to the Euthanasia injection into the IV. I think it was more for me than her but it didn't hurt her, the IV may have been uncomfortable while being put in.
When I have had my ferrets euthanized I have had them knocked out with the gas they use for surgery and then had the actual euthanasia injection given either directly into the heart or abdomen.
Most vets will give you many options and do what makes you feel most comfortable.
Unfortunately I have been through too many of these. I like to hold my animal and pet them while it is done. I make it very clear to the vet that that is how I want it.
