Pet Biting

Pet Biting

Unlike most common mis-beliefs, ferrets are trainable, in fact you can correct issues like biting, litter box, and even how to roll by simply applying the right training techniques. Although ferret training is a bit difficult you will surely find success if you team it up with a bit of persistence and patience. Ferrets are intelligent animals and since they take some time to socialize it is not easy to get them trained. It may take longer than expected but it is rewarding when they eventually show off all their good habits.

Reinforcing It Positively

Positive reinforcement works on every pet instantly and it has similar effects on your pet ferret as well. Ferret training involves rewarding your pet when ever he/she responds the way you would like them to or even if they are almost close to how you want them to behave. With the right reinforcement they will behave and act the way you want them even more often.

When you find that your ferret is behaving or performing even close to how you want them to, you can fine tune it. You can then begin treating him when he accomplishes the behavior like how you want them to. This is effective training which gradually trains your ferret to behave in a particular way.

Litter Training

The general behavior of a ferret towards litter is that they like playing in it. Gross as it may sound this is true and you can correct this behavior with the right ferret training. Once you notice that they stand with their backs hunched, you should take this as a signal and move them towards their litter box. This sends across the right message and your ferret will now understand the significance of his litter box. Any kinds of food or even water should be placed away from the litter box. If they accidentally happen to litter anywhere close to their food and water boxes you should get it cleaned immediately. This is because if you don't the area would carry a particular scent which will only encourage them to continue littering in that same spot.

Biting

Ferrets can give you nasty bites and you need to train them to repair this behavior. To stop ferrets from biting you will need to use the tools and techniques persistently and repeatedly. When you find that they are ready to bite you, hold their snout and neck back lightly and firmly say "NO" while you drag it gently a little away along the floor. This type of ferret training is called "scruffing" since you hold the scruff or the neck of the ferret to correct his behavior.

In case you find it very difficult to train a very stubborn ferret then you can use sprays that taste like bitter apple. You can spray a bit of it on the ferrets tongue and spray some on the fingers as well. This is the last resort to correct this behavior.

These are a few steps that are excellent ferret training techniques.
