How to get an emotional support pet?

I am going to begin seeing a new doctor for my depression and anxiety disorder tomorrow. I have been suffering from these disorders for about two years and getting treatment for the past couple of months. I had to leave my dog behind with my parents when I moved due to pet restrictions at the apartment. Moving to a pet friendly apartment is not an option due to location relative to my school. My dog helped me get through many panic attacks and helped lift my spirits when I was having a difficult time with my depression. I am wondering how long you have to be seeing a psychiatrist before most of them will write a note for an emotional support animal. I do not want to ask tomorrow because I do not want the doctor to think that is the only reason I am there.
In reply to enternet, there are not pet friendly apartment complexes in the small town I have moved to that are close enought to the school I attend and I can not visit my dog because my parents live 12 hours away from me.
