Can you help me with dog problems. I adopted a dog from a foster mom and he was abused or severely neglected
. He is afraid of virtually everything. He loves to be loved and I give him lots of it, spoiling him, I'm sure. But when I put his food out, he will take forever to even get to the food because he paces back and forth a few feet from it. Then he will eat a bite and run away, then come back for another bite, etc. If I bring the food to him in my bedroom, he will eagerly eat. Even though he was an outside dog when I got him, I have to get a leash and nearly drag him outside. I think he is intimidated by my large back yard, as he had been staying in a 10' pen at the shelter ladies house. The vet seemed to think that the reason for the eating oddities was maybe he had problems with a bigger dog, or alpha dog when it came to eating and he had to wait for his food. I know he was in the cage with a female dog about his size. He neutered, she spayed. If anyone knows why this odd behavior I would appreciate your comments or advice. .
Feed him for awhile in the place that is most comfortable for him...your room.
Then move to another nice calm place in the house to feed him.....the kitchen? They to the porch. Baby steps.....it will take time.
About going outside......go with him and just stay out long enough for him to do his 'thing' at first.......then a little longer....and so on. Play with him a little in the yard....sit on the ground with him....build his trust and confidence slowly.
