my dog has separation anxiety. how do i deal with the problem?
she tears up the house if she’s home alone and if i put her in the cage she salivates like crazy.
I rescued a dog that was neglected and he has the same exact problem!! But he’s better now. Here’s what I did.
First off, if you don’t have a crate for the dog I would suggest getting one. My dog is 75 lbs. So I had to get a HUGE cage. Those can be pricy. I don’t know if you have heard about criagslist.com but you can find someone on there selling a cage for cheaper than in the pet store. My dog had such bad anxiety if would always break out of the cage, but bungee cords seem to do the trick. I would also get a little doggy bed to put in the cage so the dog sees the cage as his sleeping place.
Make the dog sleep at night in the cage and also put him in it when you are not home. If you don’t make him sleep in the cage at night he will just pee and poo in the cage b/c of his anxiety, but if he knows it is where he sleeps he will be good. It might also be a good idea to put the cage near you when you sleep so she knows you’re there.
My dog had the droolig issue to b/c he would just get sooo nervous. That will just go away with time.
But for the overall anxiety issue, this is what I recommend…try the cage thing out. Put him in the cage and give him a treat. Then leave the house for a couple minutes and then come back. Don’t make a big fuss when you leave or come back. Just act very casual. Then do it again but for a couple more minutes….keep doing that until you can go away for a hour. But once the dog knows you will be coming back he will be less stressed.
Your dog will need alot of work and a lot of patience from you. But I know for a fact that after a couple weeks of working with her she will be a totally different dog in ever aspect, so it’s worth it.
