How Can I be more Productive?
I just started at a new school and it is tougher then my old one. So When i get home I waste my time on youtube walking the dog talking etc. But I haven't had time to sit down and do my passion for guitar and piano. My problem is after wasting my time relaxing on the computer and stuff, i have no quality practice time cause i got homework. SO how can i become more productive and efficient with my time.
You only have so much time. You have to go to school, you have to eat, you have to sleep, you have to walk the dog, and etc.
Write down how long each of these takes. Then subtract that from 24 hours that are in the day.
Homework also has to be done, but it takes different amounts of time almost every day. So ...
How many hours do you want to practice guitar? How many hours do you want to practice piano? Write these numbers down somewhere.
So - it should look something like this:
Sleep - 8 hours
School 7 hours (including travel)
Eat - 2 hours
Dress / Shower / Meditation / Etc - 1 hour
Piano - 1 hour
Guitar - 1/2 hour
Walk the dog - 1/2 hour
= 20 hours
4 hours left for homework and YouTube.
So, look at your homework. Is it going to take 1 hour, 2 hours, 4 hours? Subtract that from the 4 hours and you know how long you have to look at YouTube. If you have 4 hours homework then you have no time for YouTube. Set a timer and when it goes off - be done with YouTube and get to work on the things that matter.
If you find this isn't working - go back and examine your schedule. Are there things you misjudged how long it would take? Are you wasting time somewhere else that you aren't counting? Is there another activity you have to do that you aren't counting?
If you find that you often are misjudging how long it takes to do your homework, you need to start over estimating. In other words, if you think your homework will take 2 hours and it usually takes 3, start saying, "I think it will take 2 hours so I'll leave 3 hours available, just in case."
Notice that I put Piano and Guitar up with the "Have to" list. That's because you said they are your passion. If they are truly passions, then you have to put them on the list as a "have to" or stupid stuff will crowd them out before you know it. Also, you might think about giving up YouTube and find your relaxation in playing the Piano or Guitar. This way you are practicing and relaxing at the same time.
Another gotcha - if you find that you just don't know how long your homework will take then you're going to have to suck it up and do your homework first when you get home from school without a relax in there. I know that sounds harsh, but it is real life. Grown ups don't get to relax from their jobs at 3, they have to wait to 5 or 6 and you can start to do the same ... it won't kill you - honest.
