Dog Chewing Problems

Dog Chewing Problems
Will my dog outgrow his chewing problem?

My 17 month old wolf/husky mix has a bit of a chewing problem. He seems to like wires and things like seatbelts/straps. I give him all the hooves, chew bones, nylabones, bully sticks and toys a dog could want but he still needs to attack something new every once in a while. I'm worried that he'll try to chew a lamp cord that's plugged in one of these days.

I adopted this guy about 3 months ago so I think he's feeling at home now. He gets to run off leash for about 1/2 hour every day and I take him out for longer hikes some weekends.

So, Is this something he'll grow out of? Is there something better I can give him for chew toys?

He might need more than 1/2 hour exersize. He is a big, working dog. If you don't have time to run him all day outside (most of us dont!) try games in the house. If you have stairs, run him up and down, with a ball or treats. Or race around the house, or whatever keeps him interested.

Be sure to have him tired before he typically gets into something. If he chews in the car during car rides, poop him out first.

If he chews wires and such when left alone, tire him out before you leave, and possibly restrict access to the whole house (if you don't already) until he grows a little more and settles in more.

Also, if he's food motivated, try frozen stuffed kongs. A nice run, a stuffed Kong, and he should be content.

ADD: bitter apple sprays and such CAN work. However, my dog liked it! She would lick it all right off as soon as we applied it. And just about anything else we could think up to deter her. So it may or may not work.
